Seven musicians, both singers and virtuoso blowers, dusted off the contours of music for brass bands in a great breeze of freshness, spontaneity and humour.
They were initially inspired by Austrian folk music, occasionally moving into the past to breathe into the heart of the Austro-Hungarian Empire its popular roots such as the spirit of waltzes, polkas, marches and other czardas that also glorified the balls that brought together the nobility of yesteryear.
If their arrangements have long been admired for their eclecticism, richness and elegance, their repertoire today includes so many original scores demonstrating the incredible extent of their inventiveness. Stylistically unclassifiable, navigating at the confluence of folk, trad and world currents, making improvisation a second nature, they stay well away from commercial temptations and fashion effects, displaying a pronounced taste for self-derision and heterogeneity.
In a show with very meticulous finishing, decorated with a touch of staging, they do not hesitate to introduce musical moments featuring elements from traditional Slavic, Mexican and pop music as well as unexpected solo instruments such as the zither for example.
Federspiel was founded in 2004 by seven students from the Vienna Conservatory of Music. Since then, they have been performing abroad and have just won the Austrian World Music Award.
An event not to be missed.
Show open to minors.
